Eight men have been arrested after a couple in their 60s were brutally attacked in their Newcastle home in the UK in what police are treating as an attempted murder.
Emergency services arrived at the Durham Street property in Elswick around 6.45pm on Friday to find the pair suffering serious injuries, including critical head wounds to the woman. The man remains in hospital in stable condition.
Police made the first arrest within hours and detained seven more suspects over the weekend.
Five men—aged in their 20s, 30s and 40s—were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, while a man in his 50s was held on suspicion of conspiracy to murder. Two additional suspects, in their 40s and 60s, were arrested for allegedly assisting an offender. All remain in custody.
Detectives are now appealing for sightings of a red Renault Twingo believed to have been stolen and abandoned in Newcastle’s West End between 6.30pm and 8pm on Friday, before being found in Longbenton the next morning.
A large police cordon remains at the scene, with officers urging the public to avoid speculation and come forward with any information that could help the investigation.
