The University of Alabama at Birmingham football programme has been rocked by scandal after redshirt freshman Daniel Israel Mincey was charged with attempted murder for allegedly stabbing two teammates inside the team’s on-campus facility just hours before Saturday’s Senior Day game.
Police say Mincey attacked fellow players JaSire Peterson and Joshua Underwood with a knife shortly after 10 a.m., sending both to hospital and prompting his arrest later that day.
The 20-year-old, who transferred to UAB this season after a brief stint at Kentucky, is now being held on a $90,000 bond, while the school has moved swiftly to scrub his name from its online roster. No motive has been revealed, and officials have remained tight-lipped about what led to the violent confrontation.
Despite the chaos and calls to cancel the matchup, UAB went ahead with Saturday’s game against South Florida, losing 48-18 amid what athletic director Mark Ingram described as a “very sad day” for the programme.
Peterson and Underwood were released from hospital on Monday, with Interim Head Coach Alex Mortensen urging privacy and confirming the players would receive counselling support. Several seniors chose to sit out the game, and officials admitted they only proceeded after learning both injured players were stable. The incident has left players and staff stunned, raising serious questions about safety and team culture inside the Blazers’ locker room.
